I cannot for the life of me understand why I don't see more conversation in the media about the fact that Bush, McCain and their Republican friends have mortgaged the farm to the hilt and given the money to Iraq.
To date the american people have poured over 500 million dollars into Iraq. This includes war funding and reconstruction. This undertaking was wrought out of shoddy intelligence, poor planning, poor execution, mismanagement of all kinds but specifically financial, and the misconceived notion that they would hand their country over to their new occupiers and greet them with flowers.
At the same time the Bush administration entered office with a 200 billion dollar budget surplus and has been running very substantial budget deficits ever since. Mr. McCain can you explain to me why you have supported allocating little or no money for disaster relief, infrastructure maintenance, SCHIP, health care in general, education, AIDS and other medical research, and maintenance and care of our environment over the last 7 years? Can you explain to me how you can defend diverting one half of one trillion dollars to Iraq at the expense of these much needed expenditures? Can you explain to me how this record in any way is indicative that you will be an agent of change? How can you change the disastrous policies of the past 7 years with a policy that would have us dumping trillions of dollars into Iraq for the next 100 years so the Iraqi leadership can ride around in souped up Humvees? This at a time when Mr Bush refuses to support extending unemployment benefits to families that have lost jobs during this recession. IMHO this is primarily due to both of you diverting a half a trillion dollars to Iraq for a war based on lies and deceit. Is there anyone who still believes that this crippling economic downturn is not a direct result of diverting one half of one TRILLION dollars to some place it should never have gone?
I maintain that in order to be victorious at war one must occupy the moral high ground. I believe that the main reason that a ragtag army of farmers beat the greatest military machine in the world was that the British did not occupy the moral high ground and the American colonists did. There are many countries that have maintained extended brutal and costly occupations without occupying the moral high ground. They were mostly not able to maintain these occupations for very long. Mr. McCain do you really expect the American people to support a brutal occupation for the next 95 years? If you agree with my argument that we cannot win this war then why are we continuing to squander our most precious resources on this disaster? Contrary to what Mr Bush would claim I do support our troops. I want nothing but the best for them. However to me that means not asking them to make the ultimate sacrifice for a lie.
