I keep hearing from some Hillary Supporters that she faced a lot of sexism in this campaign and that is one reason she lost. Today when I was on cnn.com I came across this article on Clinton's run.
A just-released Pew Research Center poll found that nearly 40 percent of Clinton's female supporters believe that her gender hurt her candidacy. This being 2008, that sexism often took a more subtle path than in the past, taking bites out of Clinton's authority and "likeability" in ways that were arguably more insidious than the overt epithets.
Overt or understated, this primary season was undeniably disrespectful to a woman who instead deserved our utmost respect, just like any other candidate for our nation's highest office.
My response to this is give me a break! Senator Clinton didn't face any sexism in the primary season the way Senator Obama had to face racism. The questioning of his patriotism, the talk about his pastor it all had racial overtones and Senator Obama handled it beautifully. But what sexism did Senator Clinton face? She was never criticized for being a woman she was criticized for other reasons. Reasons such as ignoring the rules of the DNC and insisting that FL and MI be counted. Bringing up the horrible image of the RFK assassination for no good reason. Giving a graceless speech last Tuesday after it was clear Senator Obama had enough delegates to be the Democratic nominee. There were many reasons why she faced criticism but it was never because she was a woman.
I am glad that Senator Clinton is finally conceding and endorsing Senator Obama. I hope she works her butt of to help him win the White House. I do not think she would be good for the VP slot because he is about change and her being on the ticket would in conflict with that. I think Senator Clinton has a long and fruitful career in the Senate and could be a great majority leader one day. Or if she chooses to run for Governor of New York she could do well there as well. I want to see the Democrats do well in 2008 our country needs it. That is all.
