Because you don’t have enough plants in your garden. Because you don’t feel like ponying up money for seeds when other people have them free for the asking. Because you want to spread a little joy.
I have more foxglove seeds than I know what to do with. We had a forest of them in the front yard this spring!
Foxgloves grow in all Sunset climate zones, and USDA zones 4-8. Combining these zones, you can grow them anywhere in the US but far northern Minnesota and far southern Texas or Florida. Foxgloves seed down, so they will spread unless you cut down the flower spikes immediately after flowering. They naturalize very nicely in forest and other shade gardens, or they provide a tall (4 feet plus) backdrop for a flower garden. Most of the seeds are likely to give purple flowers, but there may be a few white ones, too. If you plant seeds now, you might get flowers next summer. If you plant in spring, they probably won't bloom the first year.
Warning! Foxgloves are beautiful but very toxic. Please do not plant them if you have small children or animals who might eat any part of the plant (dogs and cats are not usually a problem, horses and cows are).
If you would like some seeds, send me an email at blumhagn@yahoo.com. I’ll mail you a packet. If you have seeds that you would like to share, please feel free to add to the comments. I’ll update the diary with other offers if any come in.
Thanks for reading and sharing!
