From CNN.com:
One reason the California earthquake caused only minor damage was new, tough building codes enacted since the deadly Northridge quake in 1994, according to an expert with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Or in other words, sensible regulation saves lives.
For eight years.... No, truly for the past 28 years, the GOP, big business, and the Conservative movement have been successful at villainizing the very notion of regulation. Regulation inhibits growth. It creates a Nanny State. It only serves the lawyers.
Regulation is socialism.
Let this be yet another example of the benefit, THE NEED, for good governing and sensible regulation. It's shame that it took an earthquake that killed 70 people to get this kind of regulation in place. I would hope that we wake up and elect people who take seriously the challenge of balancing economic growth with public welfare.
