Recently, a blogger on here named off the Democratic senators in favor of offshore drilling, including in that list Sherrod Brown of Ohio. This alarmed me because he is my senator and so far has been one of the great progressives of the 110th Congress, even joining Senator Dodd to filibuster the FISA bill. So a couple weeks ago I sent a two-page letter to his office in Washington about the consequences of this drillinng and the impending crisis of Global Warming. I could have just emailed him, but preventing more drilling was just too important to me for a simple email. Today I got a email response back from Senator Brown, and I am happy to state that he has once again shown himself to be a true progressive.
Here is his response email:
Dear Mr. Brock:
Thank you for contacting me with your concern regarding offshore drilling.
I agree that we cannot drill our way out of high gas prices. Lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling would do little to reduce the high gas prices hurting Ohio families and business, and is simply not a real solution to address increasing energy prices in either the long or short term.
It is long past time our nation gets serious about rapidly developing next generation energy sources and technology. That is why I introduced the Green Energy Production Act (S.2940). This bill would provide the resources and encourage the entrepreneurship needed to bring alternative energy sources to the marketplace and make our schools and communities more energy efficient.
Sound and sustainable energy policy must be a national priority as we work to strengthen our economy, bring green-collar jobs to Ohio, lessen the impact of climate change, and strengthen our nation's energy security. Thank you again for writing and I will keep your support in mind as future energy legislation comes before the Senate.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
Senator Brown is a great champion of progressive causes and deserves our gratitude for his leadership in the Senate. Please call or email him to tell him thank you for his strength in fighting against the Republicans' disastrous policies.
