Apparently, John McCain is getting a wee bit tired from campaigning. Or at least that's the excuse the NYT provides for him in its recent article about his abundance of gaffes and misstatements. McCain himself:
Mr. McCain did not address whether his gaffes had anything to do with fatigue, but he seemed to suggest that they might have. "If I put in three or four 18-hour, 20-hour days in a row, then I’m not sharp," Mr. McCain said. "It’s just a fact."
There are two problems with this little "fatigue" excuse. First, McCain has one of the least demanding campaign schedules ever. He generally does one event a day and then flies around or naps for a while, with the occasional fundraiser appearance in the evening. This sort of schedule doesn't even demand the physical or mental endurance that you and I display at our daily 9-5.
The second problem? HE'S RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. Okay John, say you somehow win this election. How long and demanding do you think the average presidential workday is? I'm pretty sure that if you're breaking down after about a year of campaigning, you won't even last that long in what's arguably the most stressful job in the world. Seriously, in order for this man to serve two terms he would have to EXCEED THE AVERAGE AMERICAN'S LIFE EXPECTANCY. McCain's age wouldn't be a problem if it didn't affect him so much, but it's becoming quite clear that it is. McCain might be ready to lead the country on day one, but how about on day 500?
And this is just one aspect of McCain's age that should raise serious doubts about his presidential capabilities. What would science and tech. policy look like under a man who can't use a PC? In an era where high technology increasingly complicates society and raises brand new moral and ethical issues, can Americans afford to have a POTUS who is so technologically ignorant and handicapped? My good friend Matt certainly doesn't think so, and I'm inclined to agree. Vote Obama.
