In the spirit of the new, more aggressive (in the good sense of the term) Dem/Obama adds being discussed today, I came up with a slogan of my own, which I think would be really effective and kill McCain's "Country First" theme, which we all know is really about pointing out Barak's "otherness", pushing the idea that he's not one of us.
I'd love to see Barak and the Dems use it: "McCain: Country club first."
I think it's effective for several reasons:
- It's true. McCain's in the pocket of big oil, lobbyists and the rich.
- It's kind of funny (if I may say so myself)... So it's negative, but not mean and doom and gloom like McCain's advertising perls have been lately.
- It's catchy and it sticks. It has a pretty good subconscious half-life.
- It redirects/reframes the advertising debate from the celebrity silliness (which I don't think is working, btw) to McCain's . The media loves to talk about political ads for some strange reason.
- It's easy for the media to digest and discuss. And we know they love to discuss gotcha slogans and silly political strategy debates.
- It promises to bring up all kinds of interesting nuggets of (real) info to the surface when debates on news talk shows and the traditional media. Stuff we all know about, but that the public at large may not be aware of. I'm talking about the 8 mansions, the private jet to avoid traffic, etc.
- I think it would resonnate well with blue collar voters.
- It jujitsu-esque in the sense that, if the slogan catches on, every time you see McCain's "Country First" adds, in the back of your mind you almost automatically remember the "Country club first" counter-slogan. So, it takes McCain's slogan, and turns it against him.
So, what do you think? Is it a good counter-slogan? Would it be good material for an Obama ad?
