Here's my proposal. Since the Obama campaign has been reluctant to throw attacks at McCain, we in the blogosphere should organize videos (like JedReport's excellent ones), viral emails, and put pressure on liberal media outlets like radio and some TV personalities to hit McCain on various issues which will raise his negatives but aren't necessarily polite policy contrasts. Millions of Americans don't know basic things about John McCain which would harm him politically. This is the best way we can counter all the vicious smear emails and the dogwhistle politics coming from the GOP. And we don't have to outright lie, just bring up truths that aren't polite to talk about on Sunday pundit shows. Specifics after the break.
I'm not sure if you've talked to lower information voters, but they still don't know anything about John McCain except that he's an old war hero and a 'maverick'. Many of the things we here know about John McCain the low information voter has no clue about. We need to organize a campaign bringing some of these things to light, saturating it online and in liberal talk radio for a few days at a time, and try to campaign to force people to even bring it up on TV. Here are some examples I think we need to get out there:
McCain owns 8 houses. With the state of the economy, this is a no-brainer. We need to push this hard. I want as many voters to know he owns at least 8 houses as voters know Obama's pastor was Rev. Wright.
McCain is married to an heiress worth almost 100 million dollars. Who's the elitist?
McCain cheated on his first wife while she had health problems. Who best represents 'moral values'?
McCain was a corrupt member of the Keating 5 scandal. This one is tougher because it's not a visceral, self explanatory attack and requires further information given to the recipient. But still worth it.
McCain called his wife a 'cunt'. This has gotten decent coverage online but needs to be pushed more.
McCain will take away a woman's abortion rights. Talk to a low information voter, and I bet they'll tell you they think McCain is pro-choice, because he's a 'maverick'.
McCain finished at the bottom of his class and is dumber than Bush. This hits where it hurts for a lot of disgruntled GOPers and independents who think Bush is an idiot and let them down. There is tons of video evidence to back up McCain's lack of intelligence.
McCain has temper issues and possible psychological problems. Bring up the quotes that even several GOPers don't want him anywhere near 'the button'. Maybe it's being a jerk to bring up the possible psychological problems he has due to POW captivity but it's still an issue people can understand viscerally.
McCain is not only old, but showing his age by being confused about issues. Again, tons of video evidence to back this statement up.
McCain has no principles and flip flops on every issue. Once again, a mountain of evidence to back this up.
McCain will be a dope for neocons just like Bush was. Neocons are a dirty word among many people on the right and center who are thinking of voting for McCain. Showing that the same crew who brought us the Iraq war and has pressed for the Iran war (and now war with Russia) have all moved into the McCain camp will sting.
Update:
I forgot this one, brought up in comments:
While collecting tens of thousands from Social Security, McCain thinks Social Security is a disgraceful program. How will his over 65 block like that one?
What do you guys think of this idea? What other hits should be put on this list?
