"Social Security is 73 - Will McCain Let it Reach 74?"
That's the subject line of an email you might want to encourage your grandparents to use to help protect their future. Especially if they've retired to Florida. By helping create a viral email campaign, as part of the 73rd Social Security birthday protests being organized to fight John McCain's attacks.
My 78 year-old-mother and her pals love to gang forward endless emails. Perhaps yours do too? Here's something I wrote for my mom. Use it to create your own, tailor it to your seniors' interests.
Here's the email:
"Social Security is 73- Will McCain Let It Reach 74"
On July 7th, at a town hall meeting, John McCain called Social Security a "disgrace". He's against the program that supports the very existence of some of our seniors, because as he said at the town hall, it makes younger workers pay to support older ones. Ignoring that every person alive receiving Social Security did exactly the same.
He said: "Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today. It's a disgrace, and it's got to be fixed."
Social Security is celebrating its 73rd anniversay, making it one year older than the Senator. Yet, this man who owns 10 houses, wears $520 loafers, flies in a $12.6 million private jet paid for by his wife's inherited fortune, accepted $23,157 in Social Security payments last year, as noted on his public tax returns. He didn't send these "disgraceful" payments back.
In honor of Social Security's birthday, ads are being mailed to seniors around the country. And senior activists will be protesting Mr. McCain's threat to their ability to eat and pay utility bills, as the Senator attends high priced fund-raisers in Aspen, Colorado.
The mailers say: "John McCain Would be Fine If He Lost His Social Security. Would You?" Perhaps you know seniors who would prefer that our country not abandon them and would be interested in John McCain's stance.
FDR's Grandson recently made a video outlining his fears that John McCain will attempt to dismantle the program. Or privatize it into oblivion as George W. Bush desired. (Imagine where those private accounts invested by say, Bear Sterns, would be today?)
He notes: "It's hard to remember now, but before Social Security, half of America's seniors lived in poverty..."
Will we let that happen again?
