Great convention coverage by PBS.
Sorry for the short diary, but I have noticed many people commenting on the noisy dump truck of stupid that passes for convention coverage on CNN. The constant interruptions and endless ego tripping of that entire crew made the channel absolutely unwatchable for most of the night, to say nothing of their desperate attempts to stir up something -- anything! -- controversial. Most people have advised watching CSPAN, but I wanted to give a shout-out to PBS (WETA,channel 26, here in DC) for awesome, home-spun coverage. During the filler spaces they had thoughtful commentary - the discussion with and about Jimmy Carter was fascinating, for example. The commentators occupied the right psychological space, by providing interesting historical perspective, quiet, intelligent discussions, and then by shutting the hell up when it was time to do so. Not like the freaking CNN crew who squeezed their entire operation into the MIDDLE of the convention floor (hello?) and no doubt served as one giant distraction for everyone within hearing distance. A more obvious metaphor for the problem with MSM news coverage could not be found.
Also, the PBS style is totally old-school - I don't think they've updated their set in 20 years and at one stage Jim Lehr stared wordlessly into space for about a minute due to some technical mishap. LOVED IT. It was like watching a convention with your family, with a touch of retro camp. So, before the masses head over to CSPAN, I thought I would give everyone notice about this excellent service.
