Once again Amendments to the Florida State Constitution are on the ballot to help get out the religious and discrimination wingnut vote.
Florida Amendment #2 – "Marriage Protection Amendment"
As I checked www.votesmartflorida.org to begin to formulate what I will and will not support come November, what pops up but the infamous Marriage "Protection" Amendment. Once again we are treated to this:
"This amendment protects marriage as the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife and provides that no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized".
This is put on the ballot by www.florida4marriage.org who even provides church bulletin inserts to help get out the vote. You gotta love the online brochures explaining how homosexual marriage will affect the very being of Florida citizens. Ever been to Key West? What a decadent place that is. Imagine if they had the right to marry – why civilization would cease to exist, seniors might move to Alaska. I think Palin needs to visit there and "straighten" them out.
It gets better below the fold.
A little further down we have Florida Amendment #7 – "Religious Freedom"
"Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution to provide that an individual or entity may not be barred from participating in any public program because of religion and to delete the prohibition against using revenues from the public treasury directly or indirectly in aid of any church, sect, or religious denomination or in aid of any sectarian institution".
(Emphasis mine)
I didn’t know Florida had a problem with various religions being barred from any public program but I was willing to consider it since I don’t feel anyone should be barred from public programs due to their religious beliefs or lack thereof. But part 2 of this sentence (in bold) stopped me cold. Maybe I read it incorrectly but I think it means taking public money (my tax $$) and giving it to religious organizations. WTF??
So who is in charge of putting this crap on the ballot? Well it is none other than the "Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission" http://www.floridatbrc.org made up of appointees of the Governor (Charlie Crist – R), House Speaker (Marco Rubio – R) and the President of the Senate (Ken Pruitt – R).
Change cannot come soon enough to Florida!!!
