The doc could not let this AP article pass without comment, so here ya go!
The opening sentence in an 8-6-08 Associated Press article: "Bound for the Beijing Olympics, President Bush is carrying a message of ‘deep concerns’ about the state of human rights in China..."
That’s right. President Bush is lecturing China about human rights. Isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black? Feel free to follow me below the fold if you share my amazement...
We are talking about President George W. Bush, the man who modified the way we treat "enemy combatants," magically erasing the Geneva Convention, habeas corpus, and many human rights. This is the same president who told us that judicial oversight of wire-taps would somehow make our country less safe (despite the fact that under the old system, wire taps could be put in place without delay and then retroactively approved by a judge.) This is the same President Bush who justifies water-boarding as a legitimate interrogation technique, ignoring the fact that at the end of WWII we prosecuted as war criminals those who water-boarded our soldiers.
When it comes time to deliver his speech on human rights in China, it may take great self control for Mr. Bush to not break out in gales of laughter over his hypocrisy. Opposing the Chinese government’s abuse of human rights is important. Unfortunately, thanks to Mr. Bush, our nation has a weakened moral authority to speak out on human rights abuses.
It’s time for a change of course. It’s time to get rid of the leaders who brought us these amoral and ultimately self-destructive national policies. It’s time to elect leaders who can get America back on track, so we can once again be global leaders for democracy and human rights.
