I'm getting impatient for a really pit bull media that goes after elected officials aggressively and calls them on their inconsistencies.
On Tuesday night, September 2nd, I watched Gwen Ifill interview Heather Wilson (R) Rep., New Mexico, about Sarah Palin and the McCain-Palin ticket. Ms. Ifill asked how Rep. Wilson would answer critics who question how fit Palin is to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Rep. Wilson replied that that doesn't concern her because, and I'm paraphrasing, McCain and Palin "complement" each other. Ms. Ifill ended the interview there; she did not pursue her original line of questioning about the "heartbeat away" issue.
I respect Gwen Ifill, and I think the interview played out this way because she was out of time. But it left me in the grips of a meltdown when Ms. Ifill left that comment go, and ended the interview.
Could another interviewer please pick up where Ms. Ifill left off? I'd call this putting a period where one should put a comma. If McCain were to win (spare us, PLEASE), and if something were to happen to McCain, leaving Palin our President, he wouldn't be there, so there would be no one for Palin to "complement." Ms. Ifill asked Rep. Wilson about her concern about Palin assuming the office of President---and about her fitness to function capably as President, if necessary, given her background. Rep. Wilson didn't answer that question. Gee, I can't imagine why a Republican would want to duck that question.
Did anyone else catch this? If members of the media are reading this, could one of you continue this interview with Rep. Wilson from where it left off---or if that isn't possible, nail any Republican you cross paths with, and demand an answer from them? A straight answer? And not let them weasel their slimy way out of it?
I don't know about anyone else, and call me alarmist if you will, but this "heartbeat away" issue---the thought of Palin assuming the Presidency, when the thought of McCain doing that is bad enough---scares the bejesus out of me.
There. I feel better now that I got that off my chest.
