First of all, I sincerely apologize to the readers of Daily Kos for my lack of understanding of what constitutes a diary. Although I am an avid reader of Daily Kos, I apparently violated a protocol by publishing a link to an article and calling it a diary. I will go back and read the Daily Kos guidelines.
I had read an article by Antony Lerman in which he examined, in great depth, I thought, the difficulties caused by having one's identity linked solely to victimhood, rather than celebrating the richness and joyfulness of the Jewish experience, while not neglecting the very real sufferings they have experienced.
The article was far more nuanced than the comments have suggested, and his perspective is not uncommon inside Israel itself, where people debate freely the effects of the current struggles on the identity of the Jewish state and the future of Israel.
Perhaps it was the title of the article that hit such a nerve, but it was not my intent to offend or to violate the Daily Kos'policies. To those of you who felt insulted by my "diary" I truly apologize.
I still hope that some might choose to click on the link to the article and read what the essayist had to say.
Antony Lerman is the former director of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research
