Tomorrow is the deadline for Obama to decide whether he will release 3 Bush torture memos or whether he will suppress them (either by refusing to release them or blacking large parts of them out). Andrew Sullivan says that this is a huge test for Obama:
Obama's Moment Of Truth On Torture
If Obama, for some reason, decides to prevent us from seeing exactly what was done then he will achieve only one thing: he will tell the world that the US has indeed authorized and practised war crimes while simultaneously telling the world that America will not be accountable for it.
He will betray all of us who supported him to restore the rule of law. He will, in fact, merely confirm the worst fears of what was actually done while making himself an accomplice to protecting the war criminals who did it.
Scott Horton also warns that there are some reports that say Obama is learning towards changing his mind and withholding the memos. As Horton says:
The question that Obama faces is simple: does he have the courage of his convictions? Will he fulfill his commitment to transparency as well as his commitment to end torture?
In a separate post, Sullivan says that whether Obama releases these memos or not will be the key test for knowing if he's serious about restoring America's standing.
So what should Obama do? Get on record now to avoid accusations tomorrow that you're only looking to criticize anything Obama does or that you're an uncritical 'bot!
