I don't have much, but here is Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis liveblog of the legislature's vote on Palin's nominee for Atty. General (scroll down for liveblog). He was voted down.
ADN report:
Meeting in joint session, lawmakers voted 35-23 against confirming the Anchorage attorney, who was nominated by Gov. Sarah Palin to replace Talis Colberg, who resigned earlier this year.
(not much else at ADN yet)
Wayne Anthony Ross had some "delightful" things to say about gays and lesbians, Alaskan natives, women, anti-war protesters and many other citizens. This is great news for Alaska.
Update 1: Mudflats' brand spankin' new post (details to come). Here are some gems from Mudflats' archives:
On WAR's prospects after contentious grilling by the legislature:
And after the last week of controversy and divisiveness, with disparaging comments about gays, about victims of domestic violence, dismissiveness about ethics complaints, inappropriate and salacious comments about the governor, and a history of opinion that has every Native organization in the state up in arms over this appointment, what does the governor say? Any second thoughts?
Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said the governor feels good about Thursday’s vote.
“The governor absolutely stands behind Wayne Anthony Ross as her attorney general and is confident that he is going to get confirmed,” Leighow said.
WAR on legislation to protect the rights of gays and lesbians (letter to Lawyers Against Discrimination, who supported the legislation):
It is a shame that you folks don’t have some causes you could become involved in that are of benefit to society in general. Instead, you support degenerates. No wonder the legal profession is treated with less respect than we wish.
[snip]
None of you has done anything publicly (to my knowledge) to attempt to protect the millions of lives of innocent children killed each year through abortion, yet you collectively contribute $5,000 to the cause of sexual perversion. It is quite disheartening to me to see my fellow members of our honorable profession display such a lack of proper priorities.
Nelson Angapak from the Alaska Federation of Natives, during public testimony about WAR's nomination:
Let me begin by saying the Alaska Federation of Natives is opposed to the confirmation of Mr. Ross as attorney general. He has been quite vocal in his opposition to our rural preference priority in either state or federal law. Subsistence hunting, fishing and gathering are the very core of Alaska Native life and it has been for thousands of years. If subsistence cannot be protected against overwhelming competition from all other uses, most residents of rural Alaska will not be able to survive and will be gradually forced to abandon their home villages and move into urban areas. In his most recent gubernatorial run Mr. Ross stated that if selected he would hire a band of “junk yard” assistant attorneys general to challenge the law of ANILCA...
Radio interview synopsis featuring Leah Burton:
Tomorrow House Judiciary Committee will meet and take citizen testimony on the nomination of Wayne Anthony Ross to be our next Attorney General.
Leah Burton is on with CC, sharing her testimony regarding Wayne Anthony Ross. She is a former citizen lobbyist who worked on behalf of families and children concerning child support, child custody, domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault.
She discusses a meeting of the group DADS, being run by Wayne Anthony Ross, and what she heard.
Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.”
Shannyn Moore's comments re: WAR - there are quite a few posts here with details about him.
Sam Stein at Huffpo on WAR.
One last update before I gotta run join my real life in the actual world :-)
Wonkette's Children's Treasury of Delightful Quotes from WAR, because I love to get my news straight from Snark Central! They aggregate outrage very nicely.
One more "last update" because Palin's response is so predictable and delicious:
from panicbean's comment below quoting Palin's response to the legislature's slapdown no vote:
"I believed I knew what Alaskans wanted when I selected an individual who is a strong backer of 2nd Amendment rights, a staunch supporter of the state Constitution and a defender of life," Governor Palin said. "Wayne Anthony Ross supports responsible, ethical development of Alaska’s rich resources. I’m surprised that legislators in this case really did not seem to represent their constituents and allowed themselves to be swayed by side issues. Mr. Ross is a fine Alaskan. He is held in high esteem by many Alaskans. I appreciate his willingness to serve the public."
"Side issues," eh? So that's what those are!
Thanks for the rec list! I didn't expect it - just wanted to get out the good word as soon as possible.
