This is a kind of random diary. One of those that just comes up while searching teh intarwebs.
Somehow, I got to looking on the Wikipedia list for US Army posts. Don't ask me how I got there, but I was rather perturbed at the names of these posts. A good portion of them were named after Confederate generals. Yes, the same guys that fought a bloody war against the United States and for the enslavement of a race.
MOAR below the fold
The following is an incomplete list of bases named after people that committed treason against the United States.
Fort Rucker, named after Edmund Rucker, Confederate General
Fort AP Hill, named after Confederate/Army of Northern Virginia Lieutenant General Ambrose Powell Hill.
Fort Polk, named after Episcopalian preacher and Confederate Major General Leonidas K Polk.
Fort Lee, whom you should all know who it was named after.
Fort Pickett, named after the Gettysburg dude.
Fort Hood, named after the decent division commander and rather incompetent army commander John Bell Hood.
And, perhaps the most ironic name of them all...
Fort Bragg, home of the airborne and named after perhaps the worst commander in the history of North America.
Ironies aside, why are these names on US Army bases? These are people that committed treason! These guys should have been strung up from the highest tree, not have army bases named after them. If Pres. Obama gets a chance, I'd like to see something done about this. US Army bases should be named after heroes of the United States, not men who lead armies against it.
