With the Drama Queen Republican Senators and faithful horde of loving back-stabbers in the Republican primary for Kentucky's Senate seat making so many headlines it is almost forgivable to forget that we have some Democrats running. It is just so much fun to watch the mess on the Republican side.
As this diary points out this thing is far from won. The backstabbing horde may have the upper hand in the Republican primary. Grayson is popular and if Ron Paul's finacial backers get behind Rand, he will be tough.
Fortunately for the Democrats we have two accomplished Democrats thusfar in the primary who can mount strong general election campaigns. When you have a sitting Lt. Governor, and Attorney General of a state running in your party's primary you are choosing between two strong candidates. So, an update for everyone from the Democrats in the race.
Current Lt. General Dan Mongiardo is a formidible candidate having already outraised Jim Bunning in the first quarter of this race. The latest updates on his campaign site show Mongiardo picking up a couple of union endorsements:
FRANKFORT - In a sign of growing momentum, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo, announced today that he has received his second major union endorsement in the last two weeks. Today, Mongiardo announced the statewide endorsement of Kentucky’s International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181 (IUOE).
State IUOE Business Manager, Freddie Blaylock said, "We are proud to announce our strong support and unanimous endorsement of Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo for the United States Senate. Daniel’s life story, experience and public record as a three term state senator and now as Lt. Governor demonstrate that he is the clear choice for our union members and Kentucky’s working families."
Mongiardo said, "I am humbled and excited to receive the support and endorsement of the Operating Engineers. I want to thank them for their early show of support. Our campaign is growing stronger every day and with the additional support of the IUOE, I am confident our campaign will have the largest, best organized grassroots operation in Kentucky political history."
The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181 serves 116 counties in Kentucky with five regional offices, representing more than 4,500 members statewide.
Last week, Mongiardo received the unanimous endorsement of the Kentucky Pipe Trades Association, a labor organization consisting of eight union locals with more than 11,000 members statewide. IUOE
IUOE Local 181’s endorsement of Daniel Mongiardo brings to over 15,000, the total number of Kentucky union members who have officially endorsed Mongiardo.

Attorney General Jack Conway is another fine Democrat in this primary. His youth and effectiveness as Attorney General will serve him well in the primary and if he makes it further. Here is the latest news from his campaign website:
The Hill: Menendez singles out Attorney General Jack Conway
"Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) Chairman Bob Menendez singles out a couple of Democratic Senate candidates facing primary opposition in this MSNBC clip from Monday.
It's uninteresting that Menendez singles out Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway (D) - there's plenty of evidence that that national party people are behind him rather than Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo (D) - but it's interesting that Menendez notes Rep. Kendrick Meek (D) in Florida."

So, lets all get ready to have some real fun watching the Republican drama-fest in this primary, but remember that we eventually need this seat. Current events have shown us even with Al Franken we will need as many votes as we can get on major legislation even voted on. This race is essential for our party's agenda and either one of these guys would be great on healthcare and workers issues.
