Likely the most exposure you had to what sort of filth was rumbling through the stinking pipes of christian conservatism at last week's Value Voters Summit was tip-of-the-iceberg stuff that made for good headlines but did little to shed light on who these people are.
Thank goodness, Matt Corley from Think Progress put his hip boots on and waded into the muck for us.
Senator Tom Coburn is a republican senator from the Great State of Oklahoma. Well. His Cheif of Staff is Michael Schwartz. He was one of the final speakers at the summit, so a lot of the cameras and microphones, I guess, had gone black by then. He was asked to talk about how men can be good husbands. And we all know what kind of a message that's going to be when it's coming from a christian conservative: "God first, husband is like Jesus (he can smack whoever he wants), a woman's place blah blah blah, and beat your children, they love it."
But it was after Schwartz started to drift off into stream of thought that some really new and disturbing ideas began to shower down over the gaping faces in the audience.
But it is my observation that boys at that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people. They speak badly about homosexuality. And that’s because they don’t want to be that way. They don’t want to fall into it. And that’s a good instinct. After all, homosexuality, we know, studies have been done by the National Institute of Health to try to prove that its genetic and all those studies have proved its not genetic. Homosexuality is inflicted on people.
Now I don't know about you but I personally make the assumption that when a christian conservative suggests to testosterone-laden boys longing to impress their elders to "speak badly" about something, what he really means is that the thing is evil and that they should destroy it. One doesn't need to read to deeply into the confederate psyche to understand the whole Abrahamic mentality that says sometimes murder is mayhem in the name of a god is good.
Schwartz goes on to point out, Corley adds, that what we need to convince young boys of is that not only is pornography bad, and that homosexual pornography is the most evil of all ... but technically, since it's of the devil and all, one could make the case that ALL PORNOGRAPHY IS HOMOSEXUAL. And his rationale for integrating this odd lie into youth's world view is that it would properly repel him from any use of porn through his natural, god-given hatred of queers.
And one of the things that he said to me, that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark. He said, "all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. Now think about that. And if you, if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to go out and get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest. That’s the last thing he wants." You know, that’s a, that’s a good comment. It’s a good point and it’s a good thing to teach young people.
The "Values Voter Summit" wasn't just a pre-election cycle circling of the wagons to help determine a direction for this filthy, sewage guzzling crowd and their presidential hopes. It was, for all intents and purposes, a Klan Rally. It was a way - in a soft, and enticing voice disguised as the dripping, soothing sounds of a siren's call - to rally the troops into the streets to do harm to other human beings in the name of their filthy, blood lusting god.
What I have found, in my own experience of trying to keep my back yard clean, and free of filth, being as I happen to have 3 dogs living in the house is this. Keep the grass trimmed and visit it often and thoroughly so that filth gets exposed to lots of light and air. And when it's time to pick it up with the shovel to send it to the can, it's already a pretty well shriveled, dried out pile of dust.
Light ... and air.
