Michael Moore's film came out a couple of months too early. The progression from capitalism to third world exploitation was advanced by today's decision of Boeing to bust the union and choose South Carolina over WA for a new plant..
Today, in spite of attempt by Gov. Gregoire and Senators Cantwell and Murray to negotiate, the board of directors of Boeing decided unanimously to move its headquarters to South Carolina. Since the announcement an hour and a half ago, there has been a backlash against the union. The union, which went on strike last year, is being made the scapegoat for the loss of this part of Boeing to a state where wages are lower and where it can, for now, escape the IAM. This takes the statements made by Michael Moore in his film to be taken to the next level. Corporations are abandoning any semblance of a middle class with middle class wages or benefits. Boeing has pulled a political punch against the IAM and it seems to be working. For the American worker who wants a prosperity, the large corporations are becoming less and less relevant. Michael Moore's promotion of worker-owned co-ops is one alternative. I would like to hear what other alternatives readers can suggest. Our country may need a little more of the S word. Meanwhile, it is difficult to know how the working class or middle class are going to survive in the face of corporations letting go of workers who earn a decent wage and benefits.
