Not much is known. A shooting at Ft. Hood (60 miles from Austin TX), apparently 2 gunmen, 1 in custody, one on loose.
Sorry for the short diary. Read more (but not much) here at MSNBC.
UPDATE: From KXXV TV:
.
The Nolanville Fire Department tells News Channel 25 that they've been asked to bring all available EMS and Rescue personnel.
We've learned an incident has taken place at the sports dome, now known as the soldier readiness area.
Darnall Army Community Hospital reports they have received numerous victims. The spokeswoman could not confirm what types of injuries the victims were suffering.
Temple ISD Schools Have Been locked down as part of this incident. The district's spokeswoman tells News Channel 25 Temple Police are placing officers at each TISD campus. The schools will dismiss as usual.
UPDATED X2: Shuster on MSNBC is reporting that a third gunman opened fire on a SWAT team.
EDIT: I've been trying to get more specific information about the actual incidents, but not much is known for sure. Pete Williams is reporting that the Pentagon is telling him early reports are it's "all military" (meaning not civilians doing shooting). All reports warn that initial reports are often inaccurate, but that's the thinking in DC. He also reports FBI is on way to scene.
For those of you unfamiliar with Ft. Hood, it's is located in Central Texas, from Wiki:
Fort Hood is a United States Army post located outside of Killeen, Texas. The post is named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, It is located halfway between Austin and Waco, about 60 miles (100 km) from each, within the U.S. state of Texas. The main cantonment of Fort Hood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Bell County, Texas that as of the 2000 U.S. Census had a total population of 33,711.
UPDATEX3: MSNBC is now reporting 20 injured, per KCEN TV
UPDATEDX4: The Austin American Statesman is reporting the first on scene account that I've seen:
Greg Schannep, an aide to U.S. Rep. John Carter, told Statesman.com he was on the Army post to attend a graduation service. He said that as he neared the entrance of a building where the service was being held, a soldier with blood on his uniform ran past him and said a man was shooting.
Schannep said the shootings appeared to have occurred in a complex near a theater where the service was scheduled. He was with the injured soldier, who he said appeared to have been struck in the shoulder but did not have life-threatening injuries.
I apologize for the scattered nature of these updates; the local news web sites are being overwhelmed and are having some operational difficulties. Thank you to the folks updating in the comments section.
UPDATEX5: Kay Bailey Hutchison, Texas Senator, was just on MSNBC. She says she has been briefed that there are only 2 shooters and 30 wounded. PRESS CONFERENCE EXPECTED IN 15 MINUTES FROM FT. HOOD (approximately 3:35 PM CST).
UPDATEx6: Still waiting for presser. Local station KCEN-TV is reporting 500 military members "sweeping" base, and unconfirmed but repeated reports that shots are continuing to ring out at two different barracks. MSNBC reporting sirens continue to go off (signaling lockdown) as of 3:45 CST.
UPDATEX7; PRESSER FROM FT. HOOD. The shooter, a soldier, was killed. The shootings took place at the Soldier Readiness Facility (several buildings), using several handguns. Two others are arrested as suspects. All casualties took place at the initial shooting site. Casualties are now 12 dead (including shooter) 31 hurt). Another dead was a civilian contractor (police).
It appears this godawful incident is now over. Let's keep the dead and injured in our thoughts. I trust all of the unfortunate details will come out in the coming hours and days. Sorry to have to spend the afternoon with you this way.
