In 1999, over the objections of the victim, Mike Huckabee pressured the parole board to release rapist Wayne Dumond. Huckabee later lied about his role in the release.
The woman later wrote directly to Huckabee about having been raped by Dumond. In a letter, she said that Dumond had raped her while holding a butcher knife to her throat, and while her then-3-year-old daughter lay in bed next to her. Also included in the files sent to Huckabee's office was a police report in which Dumond confessed to the rape. Dumond was not charged in that particular case because he later refused to sign the confession and because the woman was afraid to press charges.
In 1996, as a newly elected governor who had received strong support from the Christian right, Huckabee was under intense pressure from conservative activists to pardon Dumond or commute his sentence. The activists claimed that Dumond's initial imprisonment and various other travails were due to the fact that Ashley Stevens, the high school cheerleader he had raped, was a distant cousin of Bill Clinton, and the daughter of a major Clinton campaign contributor.
Wayne didn't turn out to be such a good Christianafter all.
Only six weeks after Dumond moved to Missouri, Carol Sue Shields, of Parkville, Mo., was found murdered in a friend’s home. She had been sexually assaulted and suffocated.
In late June 2001, Missouri authorities charged Dumond with the first-degree murder of Shields. The Clay County, Mo., prosecutor’s office asserted that skin found under Shield’s fingernails, the result of an apparent struggle with her murderer, contained DNA that matched Dumond’s.
Fast forward to yesterday, there isn't information out yet to know whether Maurice Clemmons' victims were Clinton relatives, but the Washington State cop killer also had his Arkansas robbery sentence commuted at Huckabee's direction.
Maurice Clemmons has a lengthy police record dating back to when he was 17-years old and living in Arkansas. He was convicted of aggravated robbery and sentenced to 60-years in prison. That sentence was commuted by then Governor Mike Huckabee in 2000 after Clemmons had served 11 years. Clemmons was just released from Pierce County jail a week ago. He was awaiting trial on second degree rape of a child. He posted a $150,000 bond. Clemmons was also facing charges of assualting a police officer.
