As some of you may know, I am a college student at Miami University (yes I go to school and live in John Boehner's district). One of my majors is American Studies, and my senior capstone (senior thesis class) is "Darwin in America," due to this year being the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin and 150th anniversary of Darwin's "On the Origin of Species." The class revolves around the evolution/creation debate and how this debate has shaped life in America. An extremely cool class with a great professor. Our class has done many things so far, including receiving instruction on evolution from a brilliant Zoology professor, gave presentations on various aspects of Darwin in society (mine was on Social Darwinism and Eugenics), and conducted our own Scopes Trial in class. We are even planning a trip to the Creation Museum in Kentucky to observe how that side argues and frames their position in the debate.
But, as with most senior capstone classes, the major portion of the class is devoted to a research project. So I have decided my project is researching the link between anti-evolutionism and denial of Global Warming. And that is where my fellow Kossacks come in...
While some evangelicals have embraced environmentalism over the past few years, there is still a huge chunk of fundamentalists who deny the existence of global warming and environmentalism. Many of them in fact, don't just deny it. They actively go in search of any evidence there is that refutes the science behind global warming. The question is why? Why do so many right-wingers, especially fundamentalist Christians, deny the existence of anthropogenic (derived from human activities) global warming? My thesis therefore is an attempt to contribute to this debate, to show that much of the denial of global warming has its basis in disbelieve in evolution and thus disbelieve in any inconvenient scientific theory that goes against their worldview of an all-knowing God who has already determined the world's destiny.
So I need some help looking for any books, articles, journals, etc. that deal with this issue. I have done some solid research so far, but I figured publishing a diary would be a great way to aid my research and hopefully come up with a few newspaper articles or public statements by fundamentalists I may have missed. I published a similar diary on another project a few years ago and received fantastic results.
So any help you can give me, whether an interview by Jerry Falwell, article in the NY Times, or scholarly book on science and religion, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
