I have been reading and hearing a lot about Mexico. On CNN just now they had a segment about the influx of Cartel related killers into the US. And I just finished a truly terrifying article in Rolling Stone. Also a diary by c had.
And it occurred to me, as Mexico sinks into a failed "narco state" right on our border, that it certainly looks like the end-state of Bush Amerika. Here's why.
The Gini coefficient for Mexico shows it to have one of the most extreme maldistributions of wealth in the world. Most of the people are dirt poor while a few are rich beyond dreaming.
Reading the RS article mentioned above, it occurred to me that this is what Bush and the Republicans have in mind as the end result of their policies. When you add up the tax cuts, shredding the social safety net, export of middle class jobs, religious intolerance, elevation of ignorance, guns everywhere, etc., this is what you get.
You get a government of "pay to play", what we call "corruption". You get criminals with arsenals and the innocent gunned down in open warfare. And you get the police extracting confessions by torturing suspects.
Yes, this is just like Bush Amerika, carried to its logical conclusion. A horrifying vision. Unfortunately, it is exploding right on our border, our own Pakistan with a Taliban and Al Queda, fueled not by religion but by cocaine.
And if the Republicans ever get back into power, Mexico will be what we end up looking like. There's a goddam talking point for you.
