Earth Hour, when we're all being asked to turn off all possible lights and other things consuming electricity, begins at 8:30 pm local time, and lasts for one hour. Let's show our support for this worthwhile effort by turning off our lights, our computers (and if possible unplugging them or turning off the power strip) for an hour and sit for an hour by candlelight. It's really possible to live that way, since my grandparents, as late as the late 1960's, didn't even have electricity, so their lights weren't out for 1 hour on one day per year, they were out for 24 hours on every day of the year.
I think we would all benefit by spending that hour thinking about what we're doing to the Earth with our insane use of energy. If you have any doubt about how badly we need to do that, just take a look at this image showing the brightness of the night sky throughout the world: http://www.lightpollution.it/...
There are no longer any truly dark skies anywhere east of the Mississippi River, and only a few of them in the West. I remember that 10 years or so ago, my wife and I were staying in Montreal, and visited Mount Tremblant Provincial Park, where we went on a night-time ranger walk to listen to wolves. The wolves were impressive, but what was even more impressive to me after living on the East Coast since 1970 was the sky, which was absolutely FULL of stars. Much of that light is wasted, and if only lots more people and cities would turn the lights off occasionally, we would remind ourselves of how much we lose in addition to wasting energy and contributing to global warming.
Turn the lights off! Yes We Can!
