Good evening from the Nation's Capital and welcome to tonight's edition of the The Daily Show/Colbert Report chat thread. Remember to give a shout-out to our long-time host TiaRachel who has taking a few weeks off from hosting. We understand she may be back soon. It has been a pleasure guest hosting.
Everyone is welcome to jump in and join us. Turn on the tee vee and tune into to Comedy Central...Or don't. There's always plenty of discussions that have absolutely nothing to do with the shows.
On to the guests:
Jon's guest this evening is Jack Cafferty. He is a regular commenter on CNN's "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer. According to the TDS website, Cafferty will "discuss the latest tomfoolery in Washington D.C."
Ummm...I live in Washington D.C. and methinks a four minute interview will be far from sufficient to cover this topic.
An excerpt from Cafferty's bio at CNN:
Jack Cafferty provides commentary and insight for CNN's political program, The Situation Room. Previously, Cafferty was a co-host on CNN's American Morning, a host of CNN's weekend business show In the Money and an anchor of Before Hours, CNNfn's former morning program. Cafferty is based in the network's New York bureau.
A more than 20-year veteran of New York nightly news, Cafferty has distinguished himself as a reporter covering the world's financial capital as well as national news.
This video is pretty funny. Cafferty tells us what he really thinks about Sarah Palin:
Caferty To Blitzer: I'm 65 and I have been covering politics almost as long as you have and that is one of the most pathetic pieces of tape I have ever seen from someone aspiring to one of the highest offices in this country.
A YouTube search also turns up clips like "Cafferty refuses to read Lohan DUI story," "Jack Cafferty loses it on Katrina," and "The new grumpy old man of news."
America: The Book did a snarkalicious 24 hour news network schedule (pp 138-139) where they include "20 minutes: a grumbling curmudgeon reads your e-mail." Hmmmm... I wonder who they were thinking of?
Stephen's guest this evening is Derrick Pitts, the Chief Astronomer for the Franklin Institute.
From his bio, which I have seen verbatim several places and taken from Foundations for a Brighter Future:
Derrick Pitts has been associated with Philadelphia’s historic Franklin Institute Science Museum since 1978, designing and presenting many of the museum’s public programs and exhibits. Pitts served as the Director of the Tuttleman Omniverse (now IMAX Dome) Theater during its first five years of operation, as well as museum vice-president. Since 1990 he has been Chief Astronomer and Director of the Fels Planetarium. Pitts is the founder and president of the Planetarium Production Alliance, an international consortium of planetarium theaters, science institutions, and corporations, partnered to produce high-quality planetarium content.
Pitts is a scientific consultant to many organizations. He has written numerous astronomy columns for newspapers and national magazines. He appears regularly on all major television networks and on MSNBC’s highest rated program, Countdown with Keith Olberman, as a guest commentator. For more than a decade Pitts has hosted award-winning astronomy radio programs on Philadelphia’s WHYY 91 FM; and, for the past 18 years he has been the resident "Science Guy" for the radio program "Kids’ Corner" on the University of Pennsylvania’s WXPN.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Stephen is going to talk to Pitts about the International Space Station.
To wrap up, I want to share this gem that I discovered on Pundit Kitchen, the site for LOL pundits and LOL politicians.
See ya in the comments.
