A friend I haven't seen in a while is coming to visit in a few days, so I've been cleaning the place up. Weeding the thistles from among the potato plants; shoveling mulch around the trees; mowing the pasture like a speed demon. The kids' toys are mostly picked up, which doesn't matter as much because two of our three guests will be under 5. Duplos for all! The kitchen? Well, we won't talk about that.
I worry about having a neat house even though I know my friend won't judge me. I want her to feel at home and able to relax, and not to have to fight the detritus of my life, so I clean everything, even though we'll probably hang out in the kitchen or go outside with the kids.
Because kitchen visits are the best, I think. It's difficult for me to have living room guests because that's not where I live. Besides, my really good friends get pressed into cooking projects, like making bagels or soft pretzels or fresh bread.
My best friend is the opposite. Her kitchen is too small to sit in, so we sprawl out on her overstuffed sofas, cups of tea in hand and candy jar at the ready. York Peppermint Patties have sustained us through many a chat about heartbreak, jobs, parents, and other quirks of life. My decor is spare and natural and old; hers is whimsical and modern, all colorful statues and prints. We are not alike, and yet I feel so comfortable when I flop down on her sofa to talk.
So my questions for tonight are:
What is your favorite kind of hospitality? When you visit friends or family, what little touches make you feel welcome? Conversely, when you host, what do you go out of your way to do for guests? What makes you, and others, feel at home?
And, by extension, what makes you feel welcome here at Daily Kos? What kind of interactions first made you realize that you wanted to hang out here? And what back-and-forth encourages you to stay?

From Puddytat:
Hello all you hard working Top Comments folks!
I have a submission for you from the diary: VIDEO: Norm Coleman confronted by local progressives.
It's a reply to a question as to why Norm Coleman is on crutches in the video. The funny comment is that Norm doesn't have a leg to stand on. What a hoot. Enjoy it. I did. And I'd like to share it with everyone.
From Samer:
gooners lays the smackdown on some FAIL logic.
Ed. Note: This is from John Minehan's diary, "Majority 2010: It May Not Be "Permanent" or "Republican" But It Also May Not Be Yours.'
From lineatus:
LarryInNYC caps an amusing thread with this.
Bob Johnson starts the thread here.
Ed. Note: This is from Data Pimp's GBCW.
From Crashing Vor:
I guess you have to read the "MARKOS IS A TYRANNICAL ASSHOLE" diary and the setup from lapis, but aarrgghh's comment is the toppermost of the poppermost.
From BeninSC, who is still not a republic in Africa:
Cassandra Waites describes very clearly the fickleness of the ages. ;)
From Land of Enchantment:
Not an excellent troll diary, but even yet Bob Johnson evokes not one, but two bits of snarky retort in mattyp's petulant ALL CAPS MARKOS IS A TYRANNICAL ASSHOLE, including one from BooMan23.
