Progressives have been so gobsmacked (isn't that a great British term) by the healthcare shockers that we've neglected to follow the events in Central America. However, these events have great significance to us.
Here's why:
Obama's success in reforming the American image (and presumably reducing anti-American perceptions around the world, leading sometimes to violent attacks) is based on his real behavior when democratic populist elected leaders are deposed. Although this has happened in Honduras (accompanied by non-violent mass protests, unreported by our media), and deaths of teachers, students and union organizers (similarly unreported: funny contrast to Iran, eh?), Obama stays disengaged. Lanny Davis, Good Friend to the Clintons, lobbies for the coup, as do all the Republicans and Fox News. And we in the progressive netroots, seem to be too busy to notice.
Please everyone, at least read www.narconews every few days for an inperson update by the undomitable Al Giordano. It will make you weep, and inspire you to do something to help. See Global Exchange or School of the Americas websites for some ideas, email Senator John Kerry, head of Foreign Relations committee, call the State Department.
It's a moral obligation of ours to those just like us who are being murdered to save their elected populist President.
