Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, returning to form after avoiding the spotlight for several months following last year's crushing presidential loss to upstart Senator Barack Obama, avenged that defeat in a particularly satisfying way today.
McCain, who chose Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate in 2008, demolished the world record for irony when he declared that he would not support Obama's pick for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, saying of Sotomayor, "an excellent resume and an inspiring life story are not enough to qualify" someone to serve on the Supreme Court.
Ironically, the previous irony record had been held by McCain's former running mate Palin, who at one point in the campaign had declared, "Thanks, but no thanks" to hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding after having accepted hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding.
Palin, whose Twitter account has gone dark, could not be reached for comment. (Attempts to reach her at her Gobbler account also were unsuccessful.)
