I'm sitting here watching MythBusters, when I am roused by an ad that supposedly "informs" the viewers about the new Healthcare bill. What they said was that the funding for the new programs would be done by taking away funds from Medicare.
Now, I may completely wrong about this, and if I am, I hope someone will correct me, but I haven't heard or seen anything in the healthcare reform proposal that says anything like this at all. It seems to me, from what I have heard and read, that this bill is based on a model of making Medicare available to more people, so it doesn't make sense to defund a program that you are trying to increase. Of course, Congress has been known to pass some really nonsensical bills, but I just can't believe any but the most hard-line Republicans would even suggest this.
That said, are there really people out there who are so gullible that they would accept what comes on the TV, no matter whether or not the source was credible? This particular ad was sponsored by a group of which I have never heard, "60Plus.org," so I have to be skeptical about anything they have to say. What worries me is that there probably are Seniors out there who would honestly be frightened by what this ad has to say.
We need to have some ads out that not only refute the lies, but explain the bill in its entirety...not through a Town Hall, where the rabble-rousers can take over the dialogue, but on TV, radio and print, where the presentation can be uninterrupted. If this is being done, I must say that I haven't seen any such ads.
I have been accused of living my life in some sort of "perfect world," but all I want to see is truth and integrity finally winning out.
