To puzzle solvers and friends of puzzle solvers:
Last year, the New York Sun folded, taking with it one of the best series of crossword puzzles in the country. Peter Gordon, the former New York Sun puzzle editor, consistently produced extraordinary puzzles with fresh and entertaining themes rivaling those of the New York Times. About 10 months ago, I wrote a diary detailing that Peter was hoping to restart his crossword series, provided that enough solvers subscribed to them.
Well, I have some great news: Peter's puzzles are back -- this time under the name of Fireball Crosswords. They are a set of weekly puzzles that you can purchase for a very, very cheap price ($10!). Peter himself e-mailed me to request that I blog about it on Daily Kos, which is quite a nice gesture considering that I'm just an amateur crossword solver and blogger who's hoping to get a puzzle of my own published one day.
Fireball Crosswords will be launched in one week on January 14, so be sure to sign up for them soon! Follow me below the fold for more information.
For just $10, you can get the entire Fireball Crosswords supply for 2010 (50 puzzles) e-mailed directly to you. They will usually be a set of typically tough, 15x15 themeless crosswords, though there will be exceptions on occasion. You can sign up to subscribe to the puzzles here. Here is the payment information:
Checks (made out to Peter Gordon) go to:
Peter Gordon
15 Shadow Lane
Great Neck, NY 11021
Be sure to include your name and email address on your check.
$10 is the basic membership. However, if you pay a little extra for the gold or platinum memberships, you can give yourself the power to tell Peter to put an answer of your choosing in one of the puzzles. It's true! If, say, you really want to see the word LOQUACIOUS in a puzzle during the year, you'll get the chance for $40. And as an extra bonus, if you pay $70, Peter will put the answer of your choice at 1-Across. No matter which level you sign up for, you'd be contributing to a wonderful crossword series. It even makes a great after-the-holidays gift for any and all puzzle solvers among your friends and family.
If you'd like to try a couple of free samples of these puzzles, you can find two of them at this link below, in both printable (PDF) and online (PUZ) formats:

To solve the puzzles online, you will need to download Across Lite. It's a free crossword program which you can download here.
Cheers, and happy solving!
