as are many many others in Canada where a famine is sweeping across the country. A famine? In Canada? In 2010? It's true I tell ya, and my friend's plea for assistance moved me to help. With her permission, below the fold, is her plea that motivated me, maybe it will motivate you as well.
Her name is Alyx, and we game together. I run the website where she posted this and I encouraged her to post it here as well. With her permission, here it is.
Hey everyone, I am doing a good deed O:
This is something I would like to inform all of you about, Bio may have already been told about this from his school or maybe not but...
This coming April 16th-17th is the 30 Hour Famine supported by World Vision.
This is across Canada but I would like to get some people from here involved as well by doing the 30 hour Famine themselves.
Basically the 30 hour famine is about participants collecting donations and then going 30 hours without eating to experience hunger first-hand. It is so we step in the shoes of those who live this life daily.
We raise the money in order to contribute to a better life for them.
Every second a child dies from unsafe drinking water and from malnutrition but we, who have more than enough food to share, take everything we have for granted and switch the channels when talk about children from other countries are dying every second, every minute from these causes that can be preventable.
82% of the money that is earned goes towards the programs and towards the children and people of the communities who need food and water.
6% will go to administration and 11% will go to fundraising to spread the word.
82% is a lot compared to other charities and organizations who may only give under 50% of the money towards the actual people to make their lives better.
For myself, I am doing this because I feel that taking one step outside and helping somebody else, even though I am in a bad financial situation myself, it is uncompariable to those in other countries.
I do not have a right to complain that I am not making enough money or that I am not getting what I want for the time being because my situation will never be the same as becoming malnurished and going to bed every night without a drop of food.
I have clothing on my back, in my drawers and shoes on my feet.
Even extra shoes, sometimes I even go out and buy new pairs of shoes when my old ones are not completely useless.
I even buy new clothes when I do not need to.
When I think of this, I think of how those children in Africa are living a daily life of walking around barefoot, loosing their parents and having to fend for themselves plus their siblings, trying to find food and drinking water that is not clear.
When I look at the big glass of water on my desk every day, I think of those who cannot even see through the liquid but drink it because they need water.
When I look at all the food in my refrigerator and on my shelves, I think about those in other places who have to dig through garbage’s just to find something suitable to eat or those who have nothing at all.
For every dollar I raise, I feel as if I am helping their situation improve just a little to make them smile instead of feel the hunger pains when they go to bed at night.
It only takes one person to make a difference in someone else’s life.
I ask of you, if you cannot donate to try the 30 Hour Famine, to get other people involved or even raise awareness if you cannot even do the 30 Hour Famine yourselves.
My goal is $100.00 and so far I have $30.00.
My goal is not unreasonable :-)
If you would like to read about the event or anything else please visit www.famine.ca
And to help me with my goal of reaching $100.00 and possibly more please visit https://myfamine.worldvision.ca/...
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for helping any way that you can.
And if you plan to donate, the donations are due before April 16th I believe.
Love,
Arrow.
P.S: For the 30 Hour Famine you stop eating at 12 AM April 16th and you can begin to eat again at 6AM Saturday Morning.
I had never heard of this effort before and I laud the folks that have organized it. Alyx will definitely be eating again tomorrow to satisfy her hunger, but many on this planet will not be as fortunate. I thanked her for reminding me about the suffering of this world. I post about it here as a way of letting others be aware of it, and in the hope that maybe a few might give some small monetary assistance to my friend's effort. I'm sure the folks at World Vision would appreciate it.
