In South Carolina, we are hurting more than most Americans. Our unemployment rate is one of the worst in the nation at 10.6%.
District 3 is facing 11% unemployment with McCormick (14.8 %), Abbeville (12.6%), Greenwood (10.7%), Oconee (11.1%) and Anderson (12.5%) Counties suffering the worst.
We need jobs that offer good wages and good benefits. We need a leader in Congress who will fight for those jobs.
With the disappearance of textile jobs and the recession, South Carolina lost more than 90,000 jobs in just one year ... and more than 250,000 in the last four years.
Many of those jobs won’t be back no matter how quickly the economy recovers. We must look to new industries and technologies for the jobs of the future.
My number one priority in Congress will be jobs:
* Manufacturing jobs that put our people to work in producing energy-efficient cars and trucks and solar energy products,
* Agricultural jobs that turn our rich fields back to producing locally grown food and next-generation bio-fuels, and
* Energy jobs that continue our successful history of producing nuclear energy.
We must seize every opportunity to advance new technologies and bring 21st century jobs to South Carolina. It is time we had a new effort to make our state a place where companies want to locate. I believe I can lead that effort.
That is why I want to be your Congresswoman.
