Just in the process of relocating to South Carolina and during my Sunday morning brunch ran into a "Letter to the Editor" that goes a long way to explain some of the goings on with regards to Politics in South Carolina of late.
I could probably do individual diaries for all the insane points brought forward in this letter but life is too short. Shining a light on the sublimely ridiculous for now will have to suffice. We that are progressive and lay claim to at least even a modicum of intellect will find it hard reading and, I daresay next to impossible to fathom or understand without one's head exploding in the process.
The mindset of the writer has to be along the lines of a bonafide tin-foil wearing birther who is utterly allergic to the truth. The writer cheerfully and willingly subscribes to fantasies of the highest order to explain topics, concepts and policies that they for the most part show no understanding of.
These points all bear mentioning as it is hard to engage the enemy without knowing as much about them as possible, including the things that motivate them and what their rationale(term used loosely here) might be.
Trying to do something as innocuous as ingest breakfast, can get sidetracked real fast, especially when upon opening the paper you are hit with:
"In light of the debacle in Minnesota that led to Al Franken stealing the Senate election"
Putting my plate and my appetite aside, my curiosity won over
"I am appalled at Orangeburg Sen Brad Hutto's blockade of a bill in the South Carolina Senate that would force voters to show identification at the voting booth to ensure the person voting is legitimate"
Which of course would be fair and impartial, those who don't have an id that is acceptable don't get to vote - of course this is exactly what the founding fathers had in mind.
"The passing of rapid government expansion such as the nationalization of student loans, where only the federal government can offer them (and thus create quotas for loans based on race, sex, and support of the extreme left)."
Even better is this tidbit:
"The bloated socialized medicine program that is intended to kill the medical industry in favor of a rationed system such as those in Europe, where an expanded bureaucracy, not your doctor, controls your medical situation."
AS opposed to the current system where the insurance company gets to decide what they will and will not cover - and how long they will cover you IF They will cover you in the first place...
"Forcing schools to hire pedophiles (which is part of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that is in Congress)."
You can read more about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act here
The actual bill itself - summary and status can be foundHere
I could go on as the letter is lengthy and has more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride, however the point is to show the convoluted, misinformed mindset that prevails in places like SC. Scanning the net there are no end of the questions of "What the heck is going on in SC politics?" Or especially of late, with regards to the nomination of Alvin Greene as Democratic nominee to the US senate and those wondering aloud(and silently) how did that happen?
Shining light on some of the quirkiness that is at play might not kill it out right but certainly will allow for scrutiny that might not otherwise take place. Indoctrination via madness like this, made infinitely easier when one realizes that most folks read the paper down here religiously, not so much tune in to Keith O, or Rachel M (sorry guys) which would at least offer a counterpoint to teh crazy.
Maybe its the heat? Or maybe the Sago Palms and Crepe Myrtles secrete enzymes that eat brain cells?
Please Note: as of the writing of this diary, the letter mentioned has not found its way to the website for the paper in which it was found, The Times and Democrat - if and when it does I will update this diary with a link to it. Those of you in the area can just flip to page A8
