This might not be a great diary but I thought people should know what New York State Unemployment Compensation has listed on their front page where one certifies. This is as of today, Sunday June 27, 2010.
It's pretty clear even NYS doesn't think the legislation will pass, if it does, it may not be until after July 12th, 2010.
How utterly shameful and disgusting.
This is from the NYS UIC Homepage this morning.
Legislation is Pending to Extend Eligibility Dates for Benefit Extensions
The legislation to extend eligibility dates for benefit extensions remains stalled in Congress. If further action is to be taken on this legislation, it may not happen until after July 12th. In the meantime, unless you have claimed the maximum 99 full weeks of unemployment benefits or have received instructions to file a new claim, you should continue to claim weekly benefits in the usual manner. If and when the legislation passes, any week you claimed that is covered by the legislation, will be paid to you, provided the legislation is retroactive. Extended Benefits (EB) are not currently payable after week ending June 6, 2010, even though your Benefit Payment History may show a remaining balance. Also, you are not currently able to move into a new Tier of EUC after week ending May 30, 2010. For updates on legislation regarding benefit extensions, continue visiting this website. For an estimate of the number of weeks you may be currently eligible for, see Chart or use the Benefits Calculator.
So, it seems the "writing is on the wall", even my State's Unemployment Division doesn't think it will pass now. If it does, it won't be until after July 12th, twelve days past the day it would stop my eviction.
As most here know, I'm one of those "long-term unemployed". I've seen a lot of diaries the past few days on the plight of the unemployed, some making the Rec List.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you for keeping this issue alive.
I'd like to state for the record here, I'm not "being paid not to work", as some people claim. I'm not being paid to "sit on my ass, while eating Doritos(TM) watching the latest episode of "Dancing With The Stars".
Let's be clear here, after working 30+ yrs where I slowly worked my way up the ladder to become a Store Manager; today I'm being punished for it.
Yes, reality is that those of us that did everything right are now being punished for it! I can't get hired as a part-time cashier because "You seem to be overqualified for our offered position". That was the only interview I had after sending out more than 600 resumes and it was a "telephone interview".
To those of you that think the unemployment I was getting is hurting our economy and that deficit spending is bad. I say, you have been drinking too much of the kool-aid from Fox News.
The $30+ Billion that would have keep me from being homeless July 1st and 10 million other Americans, is .0023% of our total debt. Tell, me how this .0023% being added onto our National Debt is going to change anything? We pay more in monthly interest on it. As of 2008, the average monthly, yes monthly, interest payments we are making is $37.5 Billion.
While I'll admit here, that the deficit is important, but to make it an issue during "the great recession", no one dare say "DEPRESSION", ops, I just did, sorry(snark there); to make it an issue now is unjustified and completely without merit.
I've been calling my own Governor's office asking that he get out on "tell-lie-vision" and tell Congress they need to pass the bill, as he did back in March. They said they were working on it.
I'd suggest everyone please call your State Governor's Office and tell them they should help us. Why aren't they out on the news like they did back in March? Do these governors not realize how bad things are in their own States? Why aren't the calling those Senators that voted against the bill and giving them hell?
Please help keep this issue alive.
