Everybody take a breath. Let's get some perspective here. Yes, Massachusetts is a debacle but the Democrats still have a historically huge advantage in the Senate (16 because Liberdumb is definitely not with us) and a huge majority in the House. We still control the White House with a potentially great President.
Now I'm one of those lefties who isn't happy with just about everything that the Administration has done so far. And as for congress that goes double. However, I think the majority of folks in our party want to do the right thing but are hampered by the same defeatist attitudes and strategies (and addiction to corporate campaign contributions) that led to all those defeats prior to 2006. This site got off the ground by people who wanted a fighting democratic party. Something we need today even moreso than yesterday.
This is truly the moment where we go forward or off the cliff. Yesterday's Supreme Court decision is blow aimed at destroying the very ability of citizens to participate in our governing institutions. Citizen participation is what has made this site so great in the 6 (7?) years I've been coming here. Together we have made a difference in changing the national discourse.
We have a lot of differences here on the site. But at the end of the day we are on the same side. We need to rally now. We need to be strong and fight. Disarray does no good. This doesn't mean ending criticism or refusing to air disagreements. But our arguments should be focused on strategy not venting, crying or trying to hurt each other, Save that for the other side.
I think the President has a chance to regain the initiative. Choosing Volker over Geithner yesterday was a promising sign. Not letting the two least popular members of the Senate be the face of HCR might be another good idea. But whatever our electeds do, we had better seize the moment because this could well be our last chance.
