I just learned of yesterday's death of the inimitable historian Howard Zinn. When practically no one was speaking truth to power and to the people, Howard Zinn was.

He condemned our imperialist wars, the immoral brutality of our bombing of civilians and our support of the same things by our client state, Israel. He decried the occupation and unconscionable oppression of Gaza. He spoke of what is wrong with our politics and economy at home. His book, A People's History of the United States, opened our eyes to the fairy tale version of history we were taught in school. He went to the heart of what is very wrong with the US. He did not espouse pathetic, paltry reforms but real change in our institutions to eliminate poverty at home, create an equitable distribution of wealth, universal health care and so much more. He started where we started in the civil rights and peace movements a half century ago. He became a giant in leading generations of progressives as he so eloquently gave voice to our convictions and lead many of us to enlightenment.
Democracy Now! today will have Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein and others to speak of Howard Zinn. His passing is an enormous loss to humanity.
