What you see there is not taken out of context, not embellished, not altered in any way whatsoever.
Not only that, this was not a "gotcha" question like the infamous question posed to Michael Dukakis way back in '88.
<sp>
Keith Fimian, Congressional candidate for Virginia's 11th district, is responding to a caller's question about outlawing abortion in cases of rape or incest. The caller did not volunteer Fimian's daughter in the questioning, he stated that on his own.
Fimian: Listen I don't want to force anyone to do anything. I'm pro-life that's what I believe, and I believe that every life is precious and my heart goes out to any woman who's suffered this incredibly difficult decision. But that doesn't make me an extremist...
Moderator: Then a woman who had been raped, and became pregnant, would be required to carry the child to term?
Fimian: No look, I'm not asking anyone to require anything. I'm ...I'm not running for Supreme Court, Tom. I'm not here to..to..to change the law. I'm simply stating that I am pro-life, and, if one of my daughters were raped, God forbid, I'd urge her to carry the baby to term, my grandchild to term.....
Did you catch that? My Grandchild. In other words, he's thinking of himself, not his daughter's feelings, not about her trauma, not about her life after this event, no, he's thinking about Keith Fimian's concerns.
Could he be any more despicable?
And as for the "I'm not here to change the law" line, that's utter and complete bullshit. The job of a congressman in general is to make laws and amend pre-existing ones. (If Fimian does not realize that, then he is truly unqualified for the position he seeks on a number of levels!)
But let's talk about the specific also: This incoming GOP congress (if it happens, "God Forbid") will be the most extreme ever, without a doubt. They will be making all sorts of funding cuts including those having to do with abortion. So he's as disingenuous as it gets.
BTW, a little post-script here: I don't abhor the Washington Post as much as some Kossacks do -- I have subscribed to it for over a decade -- but this headline blew me away: "Virginians Share Lesson Learned: GOP in Power Not So Bad"
Unbelievable. Last year, the majority of the state voted for Bob McDonnell for governor, and he promptly proceeded to start back honoring the slave-owning Confederacy. But he's a virtual Teddy Kennedy compared to Kaiser Ken Cuccinelli, a knuckle-dragger who approves of Arizona's anti-immigration laws, is a birther, is virulently anti-gay and anti-choice and believes that Social Security numbers are being used to "track us"
And the Washington Post has documented all the crazy from these two steadily for the past year, so it makes me wonder if the writer of this article reads her own fucking paper. If she'd have asked me my opinion. I would have told her: I believe Virgina's GOP is very bad. Very, very, very, VERY bad.
