I read on Bloomberg that President Obama is considering a visit to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to try and encourage "ourtreach to CEOs" and prove that he isn't "anti-business."
For real? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce? The one that used money from oil companies, big insurance, big coal and Wal-Mart to smear you and Democrats with a deluge of hatred in the media? Instead of cowering to the people who want you out of office, Mr. President, how about you try fighting for us? The ones who played by the rules, got an education and did what we were told because it would mean we would get rewarding jobs and financial stability?
I wrote and performed this poem last night describing my frustration, and the frustration of many other young recent college grads who got screwed by a recession caused by corporate greed. Check it out below the fold.
Fight for me.
Just
Fight for me.
I'm not asking for a whole lot
Because, you know
While it would be nice
To see you indict
The Bush Administration for war crimes
Or for you to
Refuse to cut rich people's taxes
For the ninth time
Or for you to
Get out of Afghanistan
Or to tell Republicans to quit screwing the country up
Or seeking bipartisanship
When the rest of us see a fine line
I just want you to fight for us.
Remember us?
The ones who played by the rules?
The ones who did what their mamma said?
The ones who ate their vegetables and did their homework?
The ones who invested half of our life
And all of our money
Toward a college degree
Only to find that
A lot of greed
And not enough oversight
Means no jobs for me
Means I gotta thank G-O-D
For E-B-T
Means I gotta face poverty
Or eternal financial slavery
So the folks who fucked it all up
Can get another $700 billion tax cut for free?
FUCK them!
Mr. President, fight for ME.
Fight to show that pursuing an education
Is something worthwhile
That playing by the rules
Should reward us more
Than with a job serving fries with a smile.
Remember us?
We knocked on doors for you.
We phone banked our senators for health care.
In line at the store
When some right-winger was talking shit about you
We stood up for you
So stand up to them
By standing up for us.
In the United States
A clean record and a Bachelor's degree
Should guarantee me
The security
To not have to look in the trash for something to eat
Nah mean?
So please
Mr. P-R-E-Z
Fight for me
And the millions of others like me
Who tried doing the right thing
Only to be jobless, broke, homeless and hungry.
Undignified.
Downtrodden.
Spent.
Considering petty theft.
Fight for us.
We don't have much time left.
