Now that the Palins are apparently editing their own infomercial, should we consider TLC/Discovery on its way to becoming yet another propaganda network? Have a look at the great post over at the Immmoral Minority, where they note how this could possible strengthen Joe McGinniss's case.
As noted in Variety (go read the whole thing):
Whatever one thinks of Sarah Palin's political acumen or inability to name preferred reading matter, she has exhibited a high IQ in exploiting reality TV and new media to advance her cause. So it is with "Sarah Palin's Alaska," a TLC series from producer Mark Burnett that functions as an eight-hour infomercial for the former Alaska governor, whose daughter is simultaneously championing the Palin name on "Dancing With the Stars." Part travel show, part family sitcom, the objective -- humanizing the once and potentially future Republican candidate while trading off her heavily polarizing appeal -- is as clear as the mountain air.
Ostensibly this show is about Alaska, but appears to simply be a vehicle for Sarah and Todd to air their views. Who are their advertisers, and what is their purpose? Are they just courting controversial programs?
Discovery also owns Planet Green, TreeHugger.com, Animal Planet, the Science Channel, and the Hub--their new toy-promoting venture with Hasbro. As of this year, they were still one of Glenn Beck's advertisers. (Please correct me in comments if they've stopped.)
If you'd like to sign a petition asking Discovery to pull the plug (they won't, but it could pressure their advertisers) you can find one here. You can find another here at SEN4Earth. SEN4Earth is starting out with a Unilever boycott: Dove soap, and Degree deodorant, because "washing off the stink" is catchy, and moving to other advertisers.
I know this has probably been hashed and re-hashed on this site (though I don't see many diaries on it), but I still can't believe they're running this. Now that the elections are past, her tweet from today compelled me to toss this up here for you all.
Thanks--
