The End of the Darkness (The Rising of the New Sun)
(Sent to America and The President, Christmas Day, 2010)
In 1940, "The Great Dictator" brought the Nazi Party ideology to American movie theaters in this satire, concluding with the speech, "Look Up, Hannah."
Before Pearl Harbor and America's involvement in World War 2, Charlie Chaplin not only warned America of the threat the Nazi Party, but showed Americans that a message of hope, a beautiful appeal to all man to treat one another with kindness is what we all desire. So while Chaplin could make America laugh and cry, perhaps his greatest gift is his the ability to make us think at a time of despair.
This lesson of Christmas is what we all should strive to carry in our hearts all year around.
"In the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite!! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie! They do not fulfill their promise; they never will. Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people!! Now, let us fight to fulfill that promise!! Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
Soldiers: In the name of democracy, let us all unite!!!"
I congratulate you on The Birthday of the New Sun, now called Christmas Day; and I make you this present of a thought on reason.
