South Carolina's second congressional district is filled with military families located on three military bases. Having served in the Marine Corps for 13 years, I understand what these families go through on a daily basis--especially when their spouse is on duty overseas.
Over the last week I've been contacted by second district families concerned about the sudden cessation of the MyCAA--a program that helps the spouses of active duty men and women in the military pursue higher education, training and professional certifications. It's an invaluable program that helps families advance their careers and increase their earning potential.
It seems that that my opponent, Joe Wilson, who is the ranking member on the committee overseeing these issues, is asleep at the wheel. Instead of working with military families to re-instate MyCAA, he's running around conducting fundraisers with corporate CEO's.
It's these kinds of upside-down priorities that sour so many on Washington.
That's why today, I wrote Secretary of Defense Robert Gates a letter asking for military families to be given more information about the program's cessation and that the DOD ensures that an alternate program provide assistance to the military wives and husbands effected by this decision. I know that many of you have been advocates for military families. It's partly because of your activism that we now have a GI Bill of Rights.
Last year many of you heard about my campaign or joined me in reaction to Joe Wilson's breath-taking presidential insult. Today, I'd like you to join me as advocates for military families in South Carolina's second district and beyond. You can see the full letter at my website. You can also sign on to my letter to Secretary Gates on behalf of military spouses who are preparing for their future.
Join a fighting veteran who is fighting for working families instead of corporate CEO's.
Semper Fi,
Rob Miller
