Shadi Hamid of the Brookings institute has this interesting piece up on Huffpo about the foreign policy implications of the Health Care bill. Here's a little sample; I encourage reading the entire article.
To the extent Arab leaders have outmaneuvered Obama, it is, in part, due to two interrelated factors: they believe Obama has been distracted, and, secondly, Obama has actually been distracted. So, if the bill passes, they will perceive it as the big victory that it is. This is where perception and spin will matter a great deal. If Obama and those around him are able to spin health care reform as a definitive sign of what we may now call "the Obama resurgence," then the administration will gain some much-needed momentum, allowing it do some serious recasting of its deteriorating image abroad.
That is our purpose right now, to make sure the media spins this as the historic breakthrough that it is. Already the teapartiers are out there trying to do just that. We are getting beaten on polls and news sights, and in person at the capital as we speak. This diary is a call to change that.
According to this online poll from MSNBC, 2 out of every three people disapproved of this legislation. Let's set the record straight
So that's it. Hardly a diary, I know, but it's important that we win the battle of public opinion on this. Not only for the prospects of strengthening the bill down the road (cost control anyone?), but also for the entire Obama agenda at home and abroad.
