Notes:
This has been a VERY interesting couple of days. I live in Adrian and the rumors have been swirling. I'm not quite sure what to make of it all yet, but here are some random thoughts.
My first thought is anger. Michigan has a lot of problems right now. The local unemployment rate is between 15 and 20%. And most of the people in this area are hard-working, good people. And yet we all look like fools on TV. That makes me angry. These crazy people undercut solutions to the very real problems in our region and state.
My second thought is gratitude to the FBI, state police and other participating law enforcement agencies. All of the roadblocks and reports of helicopters, tanks and command posts that happened in the area have made this very personal to people in our area. Thank god that these people are now behind bars.
My third thought is that it is now more important than ever to bring progressive ideas to this area. It seems so hopeless sometimes. Conservatism is a strong force in both Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties. And this is often poor, religiously-based conservatism. But the work has to be done. It is not just about making this area a nice place to live. It is about national security.
My fourth thought relates to media coverage. The local papers and radio stations were consistently scooped by TV stations and media sources from Detroit and other places outside the region. We are poorly served by these sources.
