Carly for California
In the spirit of the holiday, can I find eight ways of stupid in this email from Carly Fiorina? I ask you to help because only three really jump out at me. Let me remind you of this fabulous email:
Passover is a time of remembrance and thanks. This festival provides us all — Jewish, Christian and all faiths — an opportunity to reflect on the challenges we have faced and the triumphs we have achieved together. It is also a reminder of the resilient spirit that has carried people through trials of every kind through every generation.
How could you pack that much ignorance in one email?
- Passover reminds us not of what we have achieved together, but what we have been given. It is not, like maybe the more-playful Purim or equally long Hanukkah, celebration of what some Jewish people did. It is the thankfulness for what was given to us. It is about freedom, but not very libertarian. "It would have been enough".. and then thank God for everything he did. It is a celebration of being cared for, and modest about what individuals can do themselves.
This week, as we break bread and spend time with our families and friends, I hope we also take a moment to say a word of thanks for our freedom and for those who have given their lives in freedom’s name. Let us also look ahead with hope to the opportunities to come.
- So the bread issue is stupid. Does she even know any Jews? How has she lived without interacting with an actual Jewish person. Maybe she could ask her black friend, I am sure she has one of those. Exactly one. I bet she has a photo.
- Freedom. Maybe some time one of us might take a moment to think of freedom. Oh wait! That's right: THE ENTIRE HOLIDAY IS ABOUT CELEBRATING THE ESCAPE FROM SLAVERY. So maybe somebody will think of freedom? Maybe we will talk about for three hours of seder or something?
- The lives that are spoken of this holiday are the lives lost for slavery. The bitterness of slavery is remembered, but also the bitterness of death. The holiday is not about rejoicing over death, but rather mourning at how hardened human hearts can be, so hard that they are willing to die to keep other humans their property. After the escaping slaves dance on the shores of the Red Sea, they are chastized for celebrating death even of their enemies. (You know, Gods are big on chastizing.)
- Asking for political donations on passover. The major tradition here is to give gifts of food, and gifts of money for provision of food to, for example, food pantries, Heifer (no, not for a pig...). Like not asking for donations on Easter, I suppose.
I only have five. Can you help me make it to 8?
Do you think this was constructed on purpose by a staffer who hates her?
