Just heard on MSNBC that Beau Biden, the vice president's son, has been hospitalized with a neurological "event"
As a neurologist (currently home after a long night on-call), this unfortunate "event" seems to me would be representative of a seizure or perhaps a type of brain hemorrhage secondary to an aneurysm or perhaps an arteriovenous malformation that presented clinically as a seizure.
I do not know much about the man however from what little I have read about him, he strikes me as a man of integrity similar in scope to his father, Vice President Biden.
MSNBC said that he is not in a coma but is up and walking and that he was admitted because of a neurological problem. I would venture to guess that he most likely had a seizure of some sort and when they did brain imaging (CT scan, CT angiogram and or MRI with MR Angiogram) they must have found an abnormality. Often, certain types of cerebral aneurysms or vascular abnormalities are hereditary. Since Vice President Biden was hospitalized in the 80s after he suffered an unfortunate event, it seems likely the his son has a similar problem.
Fortunately, there is much that can be done now with certain cerebral aneurysms and vascular anomalies. There are novel, minimally invasive approaches to correcting these problems.
I wish Mr. Biden well and a speedy recovery. My prayers are with him and his family as they deal with this neurological problem.
Update: Now for the perfunctory, "Thanks for the Rec!". Now that I have your attention, please if you over 50 with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, with diabetes and other chronic medical problems, please take heed into changing your lifestyle and see your primary care physician to control these problems. Preventative care is key and is the most effective way to prevent strokes.
If you experience weakness or numbness in one side of your body, difficulty speaking, difficulty with gaze/vision, sudden difficulty in keeping coordinated with vertigo, headaches or any unexplainable symptoms.....DO NOT WAIT and GO TO the ER especially if you are older and with the above mentioned chronic medical conditions as you could be having a stroke. If you arrive within 3 hours, generally, there is some things that can be done to possibly reverse your symptoms. Make sure you know where your nearest stroke center is!
(sorry, but I had to take advantage of the free public service announcement)
