Four brothers, relatives of mine, between the ages of 55 and 62 have lost jobs in the past 18 months. The reasons vary: A corporate reorganization, health problems that forced the end of a job involving heavy lifting, the failure of a decades old service company, and the personal choice to relocate a profession to another state.
All are college educated. The live in four different states and none were in the same profession. How have they fared?
None are fully employed. Two are seeking work. One works part time at a low wage production job and another is still trying to establish himself in his new state. Neither makes enough from work to support himself independently. Fortunately 3 are married to women with incomes.
What has happened to the world? In years past men over 55, especially the college educated, ruled the roost in terms of prestige and income. Has the pattern changed or is this one terribly unlucky family?
