A conservative co-worker who I'm "friends" with on Facebook popped up a "like" message for an organization named "American Majority". I hadn't seen references to them before so I thought I'd take a few minutes and dig into what they're about.
I searched on dKos and didn't find any mention of this group. They don't seem particularly nefarious, but in the interest of knowing the enemy I wanted to dig a little.
Follow me below the fold for a barely exciting look at what might be Newt going "back to the future".
I used the title to link this to GOPAC, a long running effort to stuff local offices with conservative candidates that counted Newt Gingrich as a key supporter. Sarah Palin is the poster child for what this type of organization produces - ideologically driven, fact-challenged candidates.
American Majority seems cast out of the same mold, but of course like the TEA partiers they claim they're non-partisan. So I was curious about who is supporting this group.
As usual with these types of organizations there's not much to go on. Their web site lists officers, but not the foundations or other major donors that support them. Their Wikipedia page is linked to by them and is an obviously self-written whitewash that is being used to show they "get" the internet. It does provide a link to the "Sam Adams Alliance" but that's also something of a dead end.
I googled the names of the principals and found the typical conservative behavior and connections but no smoking guns.
Then I decided to get creative. First, I googled their primary phone number - 540-338-1251 - no surprises there, just basic online reverse directory results. As a guess I tried 540-338-1250 ("rounded down" to try to find the base of a multi-number contract) to see what other organizations might be related. What a surprise when I found that's the main contact number for Rick Tyler, Newt Ginrich's spokesman at Newt.org and other related organizations.
Now that's a pretty tenuous link - I'd really like to find a closer connection between Gingrich and this new attempt to dumb down the electorate, but unfortunately I can't. Maybe that means this is a coincidence, maybe not. Not going CT on this, just seems like an odd coincidence.
Maybe a commenter can help out.
