September 22, 2010 - New York, N.Y. -- Benjamin Todd Jealous, NAACP President and CEO met with more than one hundred members of and representatives from New York's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community where he answered questions and implored attendees to join the rest of the nation in Washington. D.C. on October 2 in what The Gay City News described as one of the broadest, most-inclusive progressive coalitions ever assembled.
When asked about ways in which the civil rights and the LGBT communities can work together toward equality for all, Jealous told the audience that every small action, effort and deed makes a difference.
We have to turn crumbs into loaves, and little steps into grand staircases, said Jealous.
We are coming together.
Black, White, Native American, Latino, Asian, Gay, Straight, Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Secular to say we will not be divided.?
He cautioned listeners to avoid those that would try and divide or devalue the movement's partnerships, and encouraged everyone to keep forging ahead.
NAACP and the LGBT leaders are committed to working together directly and as part of the One Nation Working Together coalition.

Thank you all for the work you have done to spread the word. Your diaries and comments are showing up everywhere: Blogs, Letters to Editors, and in media comments, especially the Washington Post.
We even made the news! Granted, not a progressive outlet, but news. Perhaps you can Drop in and leave a Polite Comment.
While coordinators tout a peaceful purpose of charting “a bold, pragmatic path toward a more unified, sustainable, prosperous future by building support for these core principles and policy ideals," a glimpse of the event’s sponsors creates doubt over the alleged intentions. Sponsors of the event include the NAACP, Van Jones’ s Green For All, the National Council of La Raza, AFL-CIO, SEIU, George Soros’s Campus Progress, International Socialist Organization, the National Education Association, the Institute for Policy Studies, and many more notoriously Marxist, radical, anti-American organizations.
This is how we have been framed by this right-wing news outlet.
So, when talking with others about One Nation Working Together, don't be surprised if you hear this from them. And, if you do, patiently ask your friend if he/she ever considered tagging you as a Marxist and/or anti-American.
And then ask them if they consider social responsibility or 'caring for the least of these' to be a socialist/marxist philosophy or a kind hearted philosophy.
Then invite them to put aside the "ists" and "isms" and discuss one issue at a time, not broad stroke media promoted talking points.
Without some compassion as a foundation in our own hearts and in our governance, then we risk descending into a barbaric state. Isn't it compassion for innocent Americans suffering that drives us to unite? Is compassion Marxist? Anti-American?
On a Brighter Side, The Green Party joined One Nation Working Together.
"Greens from all over the US will gather with many other organizations and movements on Oct. 2. We're at the Peace Table to let people know that trillions of dollars are being wasted on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that could be used for human needs in the US, especially green jobs, education, universal health care, and aid for people hit hard by the economic meltdown," said Ms. El-Amin.
