Texas Governor and rumored GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry has provided more proof (as if we needed it) that he is a complete idiot.
He of the perfectly coiffed hair is keeping the world safe from
a government effort to micromanage the behavior of adults.
What is this "overreach" of government from which Perry would protect us?
Prohibiting adults from texting while driving.
Governor Perry, what's next? Protecting the people from the overreach of drunk-driving laws?
We already knew that Perry was an idiot, but seriously?
The state legislature passed a law prohibiting texting while driving, which would seem to be a no brainer. And yet, Perry actually vetoed it. The evils of "big government" and all that, don't you know.
Reading about Perry's veto, I couldn't help but think about Calli Murray, just two years old, who was killed in a crosswalk last month by an eighteen year-old driver who was texting. I have no doubt that the driver would rewind if she could. But she can't, and a family lost a child. Under Governor Perry's logic, the driver is an adult, whose actions shouldn't be "micromanaged."
But if Mr. Perry thinks that prohibiting texting while driving is an overreach, a logical person could reasonably assume that he should feel the same about driving while drunk.
In fact, Car and Driver has documented that texting while driving is more dangerous than driving drunk. Yep. As they note, most of us have done it, and we shouldn't. Ever. Because you can't rewind a mistake, no matter how much you wish you could.
I am not sure if the Governor of Texas doesn't understand this, or chooses to ignore it as part of his campaign to eliminate government regulation on all fronts. But it's pretty much six of one, a half dozen of another. Either way, Rick Perry is an idiot.
